Lehigh Avenue...
4/2/09
When I was a kid growing up in Philadelphia, Lehigh Avenue meant two things- baseball at Connie Mack Stadium with the Phillies of Johnny Callison and Richie Allen on one side of Broad Street, and dynamic high school football at Northeast High with Herb Adderly and others on the other.
Today, smack in the middle of these two venues is Cookman United Methodist Church, where GLOBE now calls home after several exciting years at the Salvation Army of West Philadelphia. The Stadium and the High School are gone now, but the constant in the neighborhood is the people, hard working folks in a tough neighborhood that only finds its way into the news when another crime is committed.
But speaking of committed, that word also describes many of the people we have met in our work at Cookman, and our new partner educational institution, Clymer Middle School. Pastor Shawn has been hard at work since the summer on the following projects:
- complete revamping of the youth program at Cookman
- leading a renovation of the basement lounge and kitchen facilities
- establishing a teen lounge for after school and evening programs
- implementing a youth led “get out the vote” campaign (which you can hear about by looking up the archives of Religion and Ethics Newsweekly and viewing the January 16 show on PBS)
- serving as de facto youth pastor at Cookman on weekends and Sundays
Cookman’s pastor, Rev. Dr. Donna Jones is nationally known as an innovator in ministry and social outreach. That she would trust GLOBE to be her youth development specialists speaks volumes about our work, your prayers and God’s grace. Watch this space for ongoing updates about GLOBE’s work at Cookman, our ongoing training sessions for church volunteers in Philadelphia Public Schools (next session scheduled for April 14th at the District offices) and new consulting opportunities in New Jersey and Central PA.
